Flownex SE 8.012 Released

Flownex Boasts New Powerful Features and Capabilities:

The new release of Flownex SE has many new features, capabilities, improvements and updates. Some of the new enhancements include:

K Factor Calculator

The K factor calculator is a tool that allows users to seamlessly calculate and add the summation of the secondary losses in a pipeline, i.e. bends, valves, restrictors, etc.

Genetic Algorithm Based Optimizer

The Genetic algorithm based optimizer (GA optimizer) provides a robust method to minimize or maximize component or system parameters.  It uses an iterative intelligent search algorithm that iteratively works to an optimised solution.

Automatic Network Generator

An automatic network generator from an MS Excel spreadsheet has been developed and implemented into Flownex SE. The network importing functionality allows user to define network parameters in MS Excel and automatically generate Flownex networks from the specified cell data.

ASPEN Fluid Importer

The ASPEN fluid importer gives users the ability to add any fluids and mixtures of fluids generated in ASPEN 7.1 or later, this allows users to seamlessly integrate predefined fluids into Flownex with the user friendly ASPEN fluid generator built into Flownex.

Bug Fixes & Updates

Complete lists of  updates and fixes in Flownex SE and detailed descriptions of all the new enhancements can be seen in the Flownex SE 8.012 Release notes, available with in the Flownex install.

Flownex presents in Penang & Singapore

Flownex® SE at the most important event of the year for Simulation Driven Design

Considered a ‘Best in Class’ CAE analysis and optimization solution, Flownex SE has been invited to present at the Penang & Singapore Simulation Solutions Days in 2010.

About Simulation Solutions Day 2010

2009 was a year of rapid change for most industries, with the evolving economy and a new dynamic in the global manufacturing marketplace. Companies everywhere are looking for a competitive advantage and new ways to add value to their products and services through use of the latest technology.

Simulation software tools are an important and increasingly essential part of the design process and Product Lifecycle Management. The requirements for shorter design cycles with increasing pressures on cost, efficiency, quality and reliability, demand the use of new tools and techniques. The most effective strategy to meet these multiple and often conflicting goals is the adoption of Simulation Driven Design.

PD Solutions is pleased to introduce a series of ‘Best in Class’ CAE analysis and optimization solutions, with original presentations from leading software providers

Flownex Reviewed by DEVELOP3D

Article introduction

When developing thermal fluid systems it’s often hard to find the balance between simplicity and power. Al Dean looks at a system that offers all the benefits of a schematic design tool but backs them up with solid engineering know-how.

Review Conclusion

In summary, Flownex is a simple, but effective tool for system CFD thermal fluid network design and optimisation. It takes the simplicity of a generic schematic design tool and backs it up with solid engineering calculations all in the same environment, integrated with controller and electrical components. Then, if the engineer wishes to increase its power and extend its reach further, it can also be integrated with actual plant controllers to bring the actual interlocks and control response into the engineering model that can be used for example to evaluate control philosophies and operator procedures.

Thermal-Fluid System Simulation Short Course

Date: 19 - 21 April 2010
Time: 09:00 - 16:00
Venue: Lombardy Estate, Pretoria
(Click here for map and directions)

It’s our pleasure to invite you to the Practical Thermal-Fluid System Simulation Short Course

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aim of the course is to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills required to apply simulation in the design and optimization of complex thermal-fluid systems. It will therefore serve to refresh and enrich the learner’s knowledge and understanding of the relevant fundamentals of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. In addition to this, it will facilitate the application of these fundamentals by applying it to a range of simulation case studies that will be carried out with the aid of thermal-fluid system simulation tools.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Engineers and technologists who will be involved in the simulation, design and optimization of complex liquid and gas reticulation networks such as chilled water distribution systems and compressed air plants. Learners should have a working knowledge of the fundamentals of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer at undergraduate level.

COURSE CONTENT

Conservation principles for compressible and incompressible flows in pipes and ducts, frictional losses in laminar and turbulent flow, heat transfer with the environment, solution of pipe network problems, pump and compressor sizing, flow balancing, compressible flow in pipes with and without heat transfer, pump and compressor modelling at off-design conditions and transient flows in pipe networks.

SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRESENTER...
DR PIETER ROUSSEAU

Dr Pieter Rousseau is a registered professional engineer with wide-ranging practical experience in the simulation, design and optimization of thermal-fluid systems including heat pumps, air conditioning and gas turbine plants as well as specialised test facilities. He has pioneered and successfully commercialised several unique energy efficiency and demand side management (DSM) technologies and was leader of the design team that won the coveted ESKOM eta award in 2002 for the best energy efficient design in the South African commercial sector.

He has been a principle technical consultant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) project since 1999 and was an executive member of the design team that in 2002, in record time, developed the world’s first operating prototype of a three-shaft, closed-loop gas turbine power plant. He also had overall responsibility as the technical lead for the design, construction and commissioning of the High Pressure Test Unit (HPTU) and High Temperature Test Unit (HTTU) of the Heat Transfer Test Facility (HTTF) that forms part of PBMR’s thermal fluid phenomena test programme.

He has been an engineering educator and researcher since 1989. He has developed and presented various formal university courses at undergraduate and post-graduate level and also presented thermal-fluid system simulation training courses in the USA and Japan. He has published more than 70 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, co-authored a chapter in a textbook on heat pump system design and optimisation and has served as study leader for numerous post-graduate students. He has served on the editorial boards of the ‘South African R&D Journal’ as well as‘Building and Environment’ and currently sits on the editorial board of the international journal ‘Nuclear Engineering and Design’.
